I consider Ang Lee’s Eat Drink Man Woman the best food movie of all time, but is it the manliest?
John Curtas, Las Vegas
Certainly not! The whole thing is about women and their boyfriends. I will say, however, that its opening sequence may be the best cooking scene ever caught on film. But that’s neither here nor there. To answer your question: Food movies are an inexplicably effeminate genre; they seem to always involve revolting couples leering at each other over strawberries, or lovable matrons stirring big pots. The only truly manly eating in movies, other than in zombie films, is found within canonically manly movies.
